                   Equity Week

October 27 through 31, 2003, is Campus Equity Week, a week of coordinated activities on campuses throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico that is designed to educate our campus communities, the public, and policymakers about issues relating to contingent faculty appointments.

Equal Work Deserves Equal Pay
Campus Equity Week will take issue with declining labor standards and the increasing use of temporary and part-time labor on campus. We endorse the adoption of equitable labor policies and standards that encourage fairness, dignity, and collegiality for all members of the campus community.

Teachers’ Working Conditions Are Students’ Learning Conditions

The week is also designed to focus attention on the effect that increasing use of contingent faculty has on faculty professionalism and the quality of higher education. Contingent appointments don’t just hurt the faculty who hold them—they undermine student relationships with faculty, institutional governance structures, and higher education’s ability to contribute to the common good.

Connect with Your Community

In addition to public education, Campus Equity Week will promote local organizing and encourage contingent faculty participation and activism. Anyone interested in promoting fairness for contingent faculty should make plans to take action during the week by holding a teach-in, a film showing, a rally in support of a local organizing drive, a press conference, or another event. Even something as simple as setting up an information table on your campus can make a big difference.

This campaign has been endorsed by dozens of organizations, and it is highly decentralized and flexible, reflecting what each local organization feels would work best in its community. Don’t feel limited by what we suggest—be creative, and have fun!

Take Action!

Reach out to other groups and interested individuals in your community and start determining what kind of event would best address your local conditions.

Visit the Campus Equity Week Web site, <www.cewaction.org>, for background information, local contacts, and materials and ideas to use on your campus. Join the Listserv by sending a blank message to: <cewAction-subscribe@topica.com>.

If you have questions or would like to get in touch with the Campus Equity Week steering committee, please contact Chris Storer at (650) 949-2287 or <storerchris@fhda.edu>. Please notify Chris by e-mail about your local plans so he can add information about them to the Web site.

The success of Campus Equity Week depends upon the energy, creativity and commitment of local organizers. It’s up to you to make the campaign your own. By working together, we can make our voices heard.
