OF CAMPUS EQUITY WEEK October 27-31, 2003
North Bay Labor Council, AFL-CIO
Whereas, community colleges, four-year colleges, and universities
across the United States and Canada have been relying increasingly
on the exploitation of part-time and temporary faculty and graduate
assistants;
Whereas, these contingent workers are generally paid at a rate that
makes a mockery of the principle of equal pay for equal work, and
have little or no job security;
Whereas, the overuse of exploited part-time and temporary faculty
seriously harms the quality of instruction and service that students
need and deserve, and for which they pay substantial tuition rates;
Whereas, the public needs to understand the harmful effects of this
exploitation if it is to be stopped;
Whereas, a coalition of activists and international unions--including
the AFT and the CWA--has designated the week of October 27 through
October 31, 2003 as CAMPUS EQUITY WEEK, and is organizing a variety
of activities, rallies, and media events across San Diego county in
order to educate the public about these abuses; now, therefore,be
it
RESOLVED, that the North Bay Labor Council endorses CAMPUS EQUITY
WEEK; and, be it further
RESOLVED, that the North Bay Labor Council will inform members and
affiliates about CAMPUS EQUITY WEEK, and will urge their support of
its principles; and, therefore, be it further
.RESOLVED, that this resolution be communicated to the Regents of
the University of California, the Trustees of the California State
University, and the Governors of the California Community Colleges.
