The workers at the Concordia Student Union have just negotiated and
submitted their first collective agreement to the Ministry of Labour
here in Quebec. There is one clause of the agreement that could be of
great use in building solidarity in the ranks of our campus unions.
Article 16.12
"Employees cannot be asked to cross a picket-line of workers
or students on strike at the university or a business running out
of university space. Employees who choose not to cross such a picket-line
will be paid for hours they are normally scheduled to work on that
day. Nor can employees be asked to do work that in any way negatively
affects workers on strike in another workplace."
In
other words, if workers or students go on strike on campus we can shut
down services run by the student union in solidarity (this includes
information services about the health and dental plan, the housing and
job bank, club services, and so on). It would be great if more unions
could get such a clause in their collective agreement. The more inter-union
solidarity the more power we all have to bring about positive change.
