Education International Resolution
In Support of Campus Equity Week / Fair Employment Week
Offered
by the American Federation of Teachers with the support of the National
Education Association, the American Association of University Professors
and the Canadian Association of University Teachers and the Fédération
Québécoise des Professeures et Professeurs d'université,
for vote at the Fall EI Conference in Senegal.
Whereas, October
27-31, 2003 has been designated Campus Equity Week / Fair Employment
Week in the United States, Canada and Mexico;
Whereas, CEW/FEW
is a week of action intended to focus attention on inequitable working
conditions in higher education, particularly for contingent labor;
Whereas, EI
members in North America are actively participating in CEW/FEW;
Whereas, at
the 3rd Third World Congress of Education International, meeting in
Jomtien, Thailand, July, 2001, EI affirmed “The rights and freedoms
of higher education teaching personnel as defined in the UNESCO Recommendation
concerning the Status of Higher Education Teaching Personnel”
including the principle that contingent faculty should:
receive proportionately the same remuneration as higher education
teaching personnel employed on a full time basis and enjoy equivalent
conditions of employment; and
benefit from conditions equivalent to those of higher-education teaching
personnel employed on a full-time basis as regards holidays with pay,
sick leave and maternity leave
Whereas, academic
freedom should extend to all academic staff regardless of the nature
of their employment;
Be it resolved that EI
[Education International] fully supports the efforts of our brothers
and sisters in the United States, Canada, and Mexico during Campus Equity
Week/Fair Employment Week and their efforts to ensure that all higher
education personnel, including those working in contingent positions,
enjoy academic freedom and are compensated and supported fairly.
