GEO STRIKE

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

PEOPLE OF CONSCIENCE!

University workers need your help.

Members and supporters of the Graduate Employees' Organization (GEO) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are conducting a strike on Wednesday and Thursday, November 28-29. The Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice (ICWJ) of Champaign County calls on all people of conscience to support graduate employees struggle for democracy in the workplace.

Join ICWJ in the following activities:

* Stand with graduate assistants on their picket lines. Use your physical presence to show your support for their just cause.

* Call Michele Thompson at the Board of Trustees' office (333-3493). Ask her to convey a message to the trustees that you support graduate assistants and that you want the trustees to recognize the GEO.

* Send email to Chancellor Nancy Cantor (ncantor@admin.uiuc.edu), and remind her of her moral obligation to respect workplace democracy, an obligation she upheld while at the University of Michigan but which she has failed to uphold since coming to UIUC.

A few handy facts:

* Over 3,200 Teaching, Research and Graduate Assistants asked for a union election in 1996--the administration refused to listen to them.

* In 1997, the GEO won an independent election, run by the Religious Workers Association, by a nearly 2 to 1 margin. The administration still refused to meet with GEO.

* Since 1996, the University has spent more than $500,000 on lobbyists and lawyers alone to prevent graduate employees from having a voice.

* For more information on GEO, call their office at (217) 344-8283 or visit their website at www.shout.net/~geo.

This email is brought to you by the Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice of Champaign County. ICWJ is dedicated to bringing the voices of faith to the forefront of the labor and economic justice movement.
