Part-Time
Legislative Summit:
To consider
the pro-rata British Columbia community college system as a model
in formulating short-term/no-cost and long-term legislative goals
in the State of Washington. Features of the British Columbia system
include:
- Part-time
and full-time faculty are paid according to a single salary schedule.
- Teaching
and non-teaching assignments are by department assignment, not
full- or part-time status.
- Part-time
faculty are provided health benefits, seniority, professional
development, and vacations.
- A system
of "regularization" is in place whereby term
(probationary) faculty automatically become "regular"
faculty.
- Right
of First Refusal: once a faculty member has taught a given
number of units, he or she will be offered a minimum of those
units in the future assignments.
- Right
of Accrual: a new hire cannot be made if there are current
qualified faculty working less than full-time.
