CEW
PLANS
Community College of Philadelphia
Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania
Week of October 21: We are sending a mailing to all full-time
and adjunct faculty and all classified employees of Community College
of Philadelphia (CCP) to inform them of the final plans for CEW.
Each person will receive a cover letter, a parity pay button, a
copy of our official informational flier (Did You Know
?) about
adjunct faculty concerns, and one other flier. We will encourage
all employees to wear the buttons during CEW and post at least one
of the fliers on their office doors or somewhere in their working
area.
Monday, October 29 and Tuesday, October 30: Members of the
Adjunct Faculty Unit will cover the entrances of the four main campus
buildings and distribute to students and others our informational
fliers. CEW tables will be set up inside the buildings where students,
staff, and faculty can sign our Petition for Equity; the petition
urges CCP administrators and Board of Trustee members as well as
Pennsylvania legislators to take action to improve the pay, benefits,
and working conditions of adjunct faculty. We will also have sticker
versions of our parity pay button for students and any others who
would like to show their support of us during CEW.
Wednesday, October 31: Our RALLY FOR EQUITY will be held
at 12:30 p.m. in the courtyard of Winnet Student Life Building on
17th Street between Spring Garden and Callowhill Streets. There
will be presentations by guest speakers and by representatives of
the three bargaining units (full-time faculty, adjunct faculty,
and classified employees) of the Faculty Federation of CCP. Attendees
will be entertained and informed by one or two skits, and they will
join in singing union songs and other special CEW music. Adjunct
faculty will be wearing and carrying signs with slogans which highlight
our concerns, and we will distribute various items like "scholar
dollars" and bags of Halloween candy corn with labels which
proclaim that we will not work for "chicken feed" anymore.
We have invited Senator Allyson Schwartz as well as other PA senators
who have co-sponsored and supported Senate Resolution #41 to attend
and speak at the rally. (Senator Schwartz is the author and chief
sponsor of SR 41 which asks the PA Senate to order a study of the
use of part-time and other non-tenured faculty in Pennsylvania's
colleges and universities.) In case of bad weather, the rally will
be held in the Bonnell Cafeteria which is across the street from
the Winnet Building.
Thursday, November 1: We will present three screenings of
"Degrees of Shame," Barbara Wolf's award-winning thirty-minute
video documentary about the use and abuse of part-time faculty in
American colleges and universities. The documentary will be shown
at 11:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. in the Teaching Center
(MG-18). There will be time for discussion after each screening.
Friday, November 2: At a hearing which will be held in the
CCP Board Room (Mint Building, Room 2-1) at 1:30 p.m., several adjunct
faculty members and one full-time faculty member will present formal
testimony about their experiences as adjunct faculty to four members
of the Workers Rights Board of the Philadelphia chapter of Jobs
with Justice. Members of the CCP Board of Trustees and administration
have been invited to attend this hearing along with CCP faculty
and staff members. Linda Richardson of the Black United Front and
Ray Alvarez of the National Coalition are two of the four Workers
Rights Board members who will constitute the panel. Senator Schwartz
has been invited to speak at the hearing and join the panel in questioning
the faculty members.
