CEW PLANS

Richland Community College - Decatur, Illinois

At Richland Community College in Decatur, IL we have a number of activities planned including a rally on Nov. 1st. The Richland Federation of Teachers full time faculty union is sponsoring the events.

One of the primary focuses of our campaign is the fact that adjuncts only receive 1/3 of what full timers earn for teaching the same class. We have buttons that we'll be wearing in the days leading up to our rally that simply say "1/3" on them. We are hoping it will prompt students, in particular, to ask questions about the significance of the buttons.

Starting this week (Nov. 15) we are putting flyers in every adjunct's mail box that have a big "1/3" on them. The following weeks we will put more flyers with "1/3" on them accompanied by additional information about CEW and statistics on the plight of adjuncts. We want to saturate everyone's consciousness with the basic fact of our wage disparity which the "1/3" sign will hopefully accomplish.

During campus equity week we will have a table with handouts and a display featuring pictures of adjuncts accompanied by information highlighting some of their noteworthy professional achievements beyond the classroom.

We have also ordered Barbara Wolf's tapes which some teachers will be using in their classes as a basis for writing assignments. The tapes will also be shown in the student center.

On the local media front we will try to get an op ed piece in the paper or at least generate lots of letters to the editor. We are also making sure that local radio and TV will be aware of our rally.

The rally itself will include appearances by the two state representatives from our district, a lobbyist from the Illinois Federation of Teachers, the president of the Richland Federation of Teachers, and a representative from the adjuncts who will give a speech. Community leaders, social activists and other members of the public will be invited to come.
