CEW
PLANS
Wilfrid
Laurier University
Waterloo, Ontario,
Canada
Part-time
Faculty and Librarians at Wilfrid Laurier unionized last year and
are in the midst of negotiating their first contract. Much of their
FEW efforts will concentrate on hammering out an agreement with
their employer.
However,
part-time faculty and academic librarians also want to try to emphasize
the positive contribution that part-timers make to the university.
They intend to generate posters that will highlight some of the
research and other projects that part-time academic staff are involved
in. These will augment a FEW information
booth set up in the concourse that represents something of a physical
center at the University.
This
organization has the advantage that it will provide the opportunity
to distribute buttons and information in support of our negotiations
while at the same time expressing support for part-time academic
staff generally in the context of Fair Employment Week. The display
will underscore the positive contribution made by part-time educators
both for the students as well as for the administration and even
full-time faculty who really haven't paused
to consider what part-time academic staff actually do.
